KEEPING AN ACTIVE DOG HAPPY IN A RENTAL APARTMENT

If you have an active dog then you are probably looking for a rental house rather than a small apartment. However, sometimes this is not possible and you may find that your active dog is living in a confined place with either no backyard or a small amount of space to call his own. It is possible to keep your active dog happy in a space rental unit but you need to ensure he gets a lot of exercise and love to make up for the lack of space.

Leaving an Active Dog Alone

There is a possibility that you will need to crate your active dog during the time when you are away, and you may want to stow the crate in your rental bathroom. This is to protect your items from being destroyed. An active dog can turn into a destructive dog if bored.

If you do need to leave your dog in the unit for a long period of time, make sure you give him plenty of things to chew on. Frozen bones, treats and kongs will keep him occupied for a period of time. You can also hide treats in toilet paper rolls. Simply turn the corners down so the treat is locked inside. This gives him a challenge as well as a treat after he figures out how to open it.

If your active dog doesn’t need to be crated then you should still give him some toys and a bone to chew on before you leave for work in the morning. Also make sure he has a nice place to nap during the day as well as plenty of water. Keep things that he could chew on, such as your slippers and shoes, locked away in a closet so he is not tempted to play with these items.

Exercise and your Active Dog

It is important to give your active dog some form of exercise every day, either in a walk, a run or a play at a dog park. Dogs that have been inside all day can get over excited and depressed if they are not allowed out. This can lead to bad behavior such as chewing, digging and scratching. Let them unleash this built up energy by getting outside and exploring their surroundings.

If you are too tired at the end of the day to put on your joggers and hit the road then let your dog run around off leash at a dog park. Bring a ball and play fetch with him. If there are other dogs there, let him socialize and run around with the other dogs as well. You can also hire a dog walker to give your dog a walk during the day. This can be a good thing if you work long hours as it breaks up the day for your dog and gives him an outdoor activity to look forward to before his owner comes home.

The key to keeping an active dog happy in an apartment space is to spend as much time as possible with him. When you are home with him, give him lots of pets. Take him on drives with you if you do to the corner store or to get a movie. Try to find a dog-friendly café that allows you to sit outside with your pet and enjoy a cup of coffee. Your dog will be happy as can be to be included in these activities outside the home and it will be good for both of you to get outside the four walls of your apartment.
