When is the right time to do your yardwork? For most renters, the answer is never. You probably wish that the yard would just stay lovely and you would be able to enjoy your weekends without having to maintain it. Unfortunately this is not the case unless you have the money to hire someone to do the dirty work for you. Before you get out the mower, the weed-whacker and the old work shorts make sure you are choosing an appropriate time to do the yardwork.

The right time to do your yardwork depends on where you live. Think about things like who your neighbors are and what they do for a living. If you know your neighbor works at night and sleeps during the day, then try not to become the noisy neighbor and pull out the lawn mower right outside his window in the middle of the day. Furthermore, think about the weather and the temperature of where you are. It might be too cold or too hot to do yardwork at specific times during the day.

Gardening and Yardwork Etiquette

In general, anytime before 8am is not a good time to do yardwork as many people are still sleeping. Of course, many people are up and well on their way to work but it is considerate to just wait until 8am before making a lot of noise outside. Furthermore, it is also a good idea to stop with the racket by 8pm at night or even earlier if you know your neighbors have children.

However, with this being said, it all depends on what you are doing. Digging in your garden is not going to cause a loud noise and neither is wandering around the yard watering the plants. But mowing your lawn will. If you are mowing or weed whacking, then choose the times carefully.

During the hotter months, doing yardwork anytime between 10am and 5pm is crazy as it can be so hot and dangerous to your skin unless you are covered up completely. This is why we often do our yardwork at night or in the morning during the summer months. As the days are longer you probably have light until 9pm; however, even so, try not to work past 7pm as this is around the time that people settle down, watch television and start putting the little ones to bed. It is hard enough getting your kids to sleep without the loud noise of a weed whacker going right outside their door.

Best Times to Do Yardwork

On the weekends, anytime is a good time to do yardwork. This is one of the things that weekends are made for. However, if you want to actually enjoy your weekends you may wish to start your yardwork on Saturday morning. Sleep in, wake up with your family, have a nice cup of coffee and head outside to do a couple hours of work. Once you have finished you will be able to have lunch and enjoy the rest of the weekend without constantly thinking about mowing the lawn and cleaning up the yard.

This is only one suggestion. You may be happier to spend your weekend doing things with friends and family or relaxing and then spending Sunday afternoon doing the yardwork. Or, you may wish to spend an hour every night after work in the garden. This is entirely up to you. As long as you are not disturbing the peace and that you are choosing an appropriate time to do yardwork, then the rest is up to you.
