CHOOSING YOUR LIVING ROOM FURNITURE

Your living room is one of the most used rooms in the house. This is the place where your family and guests will gather to unwind and relax. Most living rooms consist of a sofa or two as well as a cabinet, a television and perhaps a coffee table as well as some sort of lighting system such as a lamp. If your home has more than one entertainment space then you may prefer to use your living room as a ‘conversation area’ and get rid of the television in exchange for board games, a wine cabinet or a shelf with reading material and choose to keep the television area to another part of the house.

Selecting your Sofas

Choosing furniture is not as difficult as dealing with a lost dog, but it will take time. You are going to need to purchase some sort of couch or chair option to furnish your living room. The traditional sofa, love seat or lounge chairs are still quite popular and come in a number of materials and colors designed for all budgets and all tastes. Leather living room furniture is a popular option as it can be easy to clean (as long as you steer clear of suede!) but you can choose furniture in any material.

Consider the feel of the room when selecting your living room furniture. If you have children and know you will be spending a lot of time in the living room, drinking soft drink, playing with crayons and making a mess, then choose darker colored furniture that is stain resistant. If your living room is made for adult conversation, then lighter colored furniture is more appropriate. It all depends on your tastes. A black and white living room will look elegant and stylish but bolder colors such as dark reds, greens and browns are also popular choices for comfortable living room ambience.

L-couches are quite popular these days, especially for a larger living room space where you may want to corner off a section for the lounge room. L-couches consist of the main section of the couch as well as an area where you can ‘lay down’. In other words, an L-couch is two couches together.

There are several other sizes and shapes of couches as well apart from the traditional L-couch such as the C-couch where there is enough space to fit the entire family (and guests) on the same couch. Sectional couches can come with anywhere from 4 to 12 sitting areas and some include chairs that will fold out into lazy boys as well. Keep in mind that sectional couches also tend to be a little more on the expensive side, however, as they are an entire lounge room in one!

Furnishing your Living Room

Living rooms are quite lived in and thus you can expect toys scattered around the place as well as items constantly out of place. This is why it is a good idea to also purchase a cabinet, an ottoman that opens into a storage container, a treasure chest or a toy box for the living room as well. You can keep items such as DVD’s, CD’s, photo albums and board games in a cabinet as well as items that you don’t want out in the open.

When choosing your living room furniture, consider using an ottoman or a treasure chest to store blankets and extra pillows for the living room and teach your children to put all their toys in their special toy box at the end of each play session. These additional furniture items will help keep your living room more organized and ensure that you can unwind in a clean and cozy environment after a long day outside the home.
