One of the joys of preparing for the arrival of a little one is decorating the nursery. However, it can be an overwhelming task, especially if this is your first little one. There are so many different nursery decorations, themes and options to choose from. How will you ensure you are selecting the right accessories without spending too much money or making the room seem cluttered?

Choosing your Theme and Colors

Your baby doesn’t really care about the color of the walls or the linen you choose. However, it is still fun to decorate and theme your baby’s nursery to suit your tastes. The first thing you need to do when decorating your baby’s room is purchase the larger items including a crib, a change table, a dresser and a rocker or glider. Plan ahead by checking the catalogues each month to see what items are on special. If you are planning on buying these items new, then you should be able to get them at least 20% off retail price by shopping during the seasonal sales.

If you are looking for a theme for your baby’s nursery there are several choices to consider. A book or television character is a popular choice such as Winnie the Pooh, Thomas the Tank Engine, Batman, Spiderman, Disney Princesses or Finding Nemo. You may want to choose an animal-related theme such as On the Farm or In the Jungle. Choose colorful wall stickers of pigs and cows as well as a red laundry bin or opt for green, brown and yellow prints and paints with lions, tigers and bears crawling up the walls and off the linen. For an earthier feel, consider theming your nursery in stars, moons and other celestial objects or go for an Under the Sea theme with rich blues and prints of fish, seashells, mermaids and soft new leather furniture.

Avoid Going Overboard

It is easy to go overboard on an idea, creating a cluttered tacky look. Keep the big picture in mind by choosing the big ticket items in one standard color, such as white or birch, and then decorate the accessories using your theme or your color of choice. For example, look for items such as lamps, mobiles, curtains, pillows and rugs that are in your theme of choice. Or look for nursery bedding, a diaper stacker and wall stickers that match your theme. Anything that is not in the pattern of your choice, try to match with similar colors. For example, if you are doing a Winnie the Pooh theme with red, yellow and blues, then look for blue photo frames and red linen to match the colors of your main theme.

There are several places you can go to find the items to decorate your nursery. If you are really crafty you might want to purchase a large amount of pattern fabric from a fabric store and then make the curtains, the wall paintings and the bed linen. Toys R Us, Babies R Us and Baby World all stock themed nursery packages that may include a lamp, mobile, rug and linen at a discounted price if you by them as a set. Or you can shop for these items separately through eBay or at garage sales which will provide you with the more affordable option.

The best thing about decorating a baby nursery is that the possibilities are endless. This is your time to highlight your creative side and have let that inner child run wild. Design a room that is truly special and unique for the newest edition to your family.
