HOUSE AND CONTENT INSURANCE
No matter what type of house you live in, you need to protect your belongings with renters insurance. There really is no reason not to compare and review coverages from several insurance companies. Renters insurance is cheap and you can obtain quotes for as low as $5/month. Imagine if your contents were stolen out of your house for a minute. What would you do?
When you first get a house and content insurance policy, you will want to make a home inventory. Make a list of all your belongings. Take photographs or video of every room and item. Save receipts for expensive items such as laptops, tvs, jewelry, electronics and other valuables. Keep a copy of your inventory in a safe place outside the home.
Should a claim need to be made on your renters insurance, collect your home inventory. Describe the incident that occurred that is making it necessary to file the claim. This could be due to a fire, flood, accident or theft. Make a list of all your losses. Use as much detail as possible, including your inventory, photos, video and witnesses. Make an estimate of the approximate total value of the loss that occurred.
On the back of your insurance card, you should find a telephone number specific to filing claims. If this is not available, call the company or agent. Have your home and content insurance card available with the policy number and your detailed lists. If there is an online option, this may be quicker in getting the process moving. You can visit the company website and search for the tab that directs you to “file claim” or “claims.” Be sure to print all information needed.
Before ending the call or completing the form online, be sure to collect a claim reference number and, if applicable, the name of the person who assisted you. Submit any photographs, video, lists, copies of receipts and any other documentation by mail or fax. Also, set up a time for an adjuster to visit the property and view the damage.
After filing the claim for your house and content insurance, you will want to do a little research to find out the replacement values of the items that were lost or damaged. When you receive your settlement, you will want to have this information before you sign any documents or accept the offered settlement. You may also need to pay a deductible before you receive your settlement amount.
Remember that one of the most important parts of the claim process happens well before you even need to make a claim - this is having a home inventory. Having an inventory is especially important in a total loss, which can happen if you experience a fire or flood. Hopefully you will never have to make a renters insurance claim. But if you do, you will have the peace of mind that a house and content insurance policy provides
