PACKING TO MOVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY
Moving across the country can be stressful for everyone. Your children are probably upset about leaving their friends; your spouse may be stressed about finding a new job or starting a new position; and you are probably overwhelmed with things that need to be done before you even put an item into a box. When you are moving across the country it is important to keep the big picture in mind. With that being said, it is also a good idea to make a checklist of each and every smaller thing that needs to be done. Eventually, all of these items will come together into the big picture on the other side of the country.
What Moving Company?
One of the things you need to decide when you are packing to move across the country is how you will physically get your items there. Most long distance movers will opt to use a moving service company that will drive a large truck across the nation for them. That way you and your family can either fly there or take your own car for a big road trip without worrying about lugging a van full of your items along for the ride.
A long distance moving company does more than just drive your things across the state. They also offer packing services and will physically move your furniture, electronics and child play houses out of your old house, into the van and into your new home. This can be a huge relief and alleviates you from the physical and emotional pressure that comes with moving large scale items.
If you do decide to move the items yourself you may want to hire a U-haul service that allows you to rent out the van and then return it to a depot in your new town. You will be responsible for packing up your items and driving the van across the country but this is often a cheaper option than using a long distance moving company. Make sure you shop around for different quotes on the different size vans as this will impact your price.
Organization and Packing
Another thing you need to do is organize for a new life on the other side of the nation. This means finding a new job (if you haven't done so already), finding schools and daycare services for the kids, finding new places to play and finding a new group of friends. Some of these things will come with time but you may want to already have school and daycare lined up for when you get there. Unless you have planned your move for the summer, you don't want the kids missing out on weeks of school because you are busy unpacking and unable to enroll them.
You also need to think about connecting your home to all the services you need such as water, electricity, phone, internet, cable and anything else your family requires. Some landlords will offer to do this for you or may even include some of these bills on your rent each month. However, in most instances, you will be responsible for doing this yourself.
It can be overwhelming to think about all the things that need to be done when packing to move across the country. Focus on one thing at a time. Pack up one room at a time and try not to panic. While you pack, do a thorough clean of each room. In time, you will get there and before you know it, you and your family will be on your way to a new state, a new house and a new life.
