PAINTING A FABRIC CHAIR

Is your favorite chair looking a little worn out? Don't put it on eBay just yet. You can actually paint the fabric on your worn out chair to make it look like new again. Spend the afternoon exploring painting ideas and giving your favorite chair a face lift and a whole new edgy design.

Choosing your Paint

There are several different ways to paint a fabric piece of furniture. Spray paint is actually one of the best options that many people will look past. When you are using spray paint make sure you also wear gloves and a protective mask so that the fumes do not get into your lungs. Keep the kids and pets inside while painting. Pull the chair outside so that you do not accidentally paint the walls or carpets in the process, even if you're apartment renting without a lease.

To spray paint a chair, first shake the can well and spray lightly. Use long sweeping motions and only apply one layer at a time. Let the paint dry before adding another coat to avoid streaking and paint dripping marks. Once you have finished spray painting you need to wait at least three days before bringing the chair back in and making it your bum's home again. It is a good idea to wait at least five days just in case.

If you would prefer a faster paint job, then you can opt for acrylic paint which will take less time to dry. In fact, it may be dry in as little as 30 minutes but you should still wait a couple of days before sitting on it, especially if you have used more than one coat. However, one of the pluses of using acrylic is that it is fairly thick and thus one coat is often enough.

Acrylic paint can be bought at any craft store and usually comes in small or large tubes. You can use a standard hand brush to paint the chair or, if you are looking for an edgy new look, consider painting a design into the chair. When you are painting a fabric chair with acrylic paint you will use the chair in the same way as a canvas. Simply spread the paint on the chair and work your magic.

Fixing a Painting Mistake

Working with paint is always dangerous. What happens if you make a mistake? The good thing about working with paint is that you do have a window before the paint dries to correct the problem. If you notice the mistake before the paint is dry then you can easily blot at it with a clean cloth. You can also use soap and water to clean off the stain on the fabric. If you notice that the mistake has already dried then you can use acetone to get rid of it.

If you really are not happy with the job at the end of the process you can always try again with a similar color or scrap the project all together. If you are new to the world of painting then it might be a good idea to practice on an older chair before moving onto the real thing. That way you won't be disappointed if it doesn't turn out the way you had hoped.

Whether you are crafty at heart or want to try your luck, when it comes to painting a fabric chair, have some fun with it. Choose funky colors or transfer a design. Let your creative energy flow and see what you come up with. You may surprise yourself.
