Having a gym in your apartment complex can be a huge blessing. Not only will you benefit from working out in the comfort of your own complex but you will also save a small fortune on gym membership fees each year. However, there are a few things to consider when using your complex gym and ways to get the best workout in the shortest amount of time.

Choosing your Gym Time

There are certain times during the day and at night when all gyms are full. Typically this is between the hours of 6:00AM and 8:00AM (before work) as well as 5:00PM to 8:00PM (after work). If you are like many people, you will be working Monday to Friday around 9:00AM to 5:00PM and thus will need to use the complex gym during the busy times. If you do not work during these hours, then try to schedule your routine away from these busy hours. That way you can avoid having to work out with a lot of other people and having to wait for the machines.

If the only time you can work out is during peak time, then test out different days and different times throughout the week and see when it is less busy. Your complex may be filled with single people that prefer to work out early and then have a late dinner and thus it may be less busy around 7:00PM. Or, you may live with people that prefer to eat an early dinner with their family and then hit the weights after the kids are in bed at 7:30PM. If you are living in a complex with a gym that is busy around the clock, then perhaps ask your landlord to start a sign-up sheet for the exercise machines. That way everyone gets a fair chance to get into shape.

Complex Gym Etiquette

Gym memberships are expensive and typically cost members around $500-$1000 per year. If you have a gym in your complex, then you are saving this amount of money each year. You are also saving a lot of time as you do not need to travel to the gym. A few flights of stairs and you are there.

However, with that being said, it is important to obey the rules of the gym. Just because you are getting a free membership doesn’t mean you can treat the weights and equipment like your own personal home gym. Be sure to wipe down all equipment after you use it. Try not to stay on one machine for more than 45 minutes, especially if others are waiting. Always wear appropriate gym attire and bring a sealed water bottle, so you can avoid water leaks, and a towel to avoid breaking up your routine to hit the water fountain after every repetition.

If you are listening to music be sure that it is not too loud and leave the cell phone in your apartment. Although it can be tempting to talk and walk on the treadmill, this will only annoy the others using the facilities and negatively impact your workout. If you have young children it may be tempting to bring them down to the gym with you and let them play while you work out. In most complexes, this is not allowed as it can be a liability. Furthermore, having your children run around while others are trying to exercise is not only annoying but also very rude. Ask your spouse to watch them while you head down to use the complex gym or get a neighbor to come over for an hour to help you out.
