Walking to work allows you to combine the need for physical exercise with your need for transportation to and from the office. It is a great way to start and end your day and also can help you lower your fuel intake which help on energy costs. However, walking all the way to your workplace may not be possible if you live a hefty distance away. A Guide to Walking

Walking is considered a form of exercise. It is quite relaxing and good for the knees and other joints. Unlike some other activities such as running, walking is not known to cause serious injuries or stress to the body. Walking is the perfect way to stay in shape and it is recommended that everyone does at least thirty minutes of exercise, such as walking, on a daily basis.

If you are walking to work you need to invest in a good pair of shoes. You can get shoes that match the contours of your feet which are going to be expensive but well worth it in the end. Experts recommend changing your shoes every six months if you are wearing them on a regular basis. You might also want to wear lightweight pants and a cotton t-shirt while walking. Bring a backpack with a spare change of clothes for work as well as a water bottle and towel to dry off once you get there.

Of course, walking to work is not always possible. On those days when it is pissing down rain and you have an important meeting in the morning, you don't want to risk getting wet, even if you have an umbrella. During the winter months it might be too cold and slippery to walk to work without bringing your ice skates or cross country skis with you.

Walking Long Distances

Walking all the way to work is also not possible if you live a long distance away. In general, if you are walking more than five miles each way, then this is going to be quite tiring. This equates to more than 10 miles per day after a long day at work as well. If you do live further away from the office than this, then consider driving to a point somewhere in between your work and your home. That way you can walk some of the way, save on fuel and still get a good workout in the process.

If you are just starting out with exercising then it might be a good idea to only park a mile away. As time goes on you might start parking further and further away until you are walking five miles every morning and five miles every night. This is a long daily walk, however, so don't feel bad if you can only manage a quarter of this amount. Any walking is better than none at all.

Make sure you leave plenty of time to walk to work in the morning. Go for a walk around the block and time how long it takes you to walk one mile. It might take you fifteen minutes to walk one mile which means if you are walking three miles, you should allow 45 minutes to get there plus an extra 15 minutes to clean up once you are there. Time your walk accordingly so that you are not constantly showing up late and upsetting your boss and your co workers. They may not see the good side of walking to work if it means you are constantly late.
